Principal's Message

Dear Island View Families:

This is my favorite time of the school year. The tree outside my office window is deepening to red, and our hallways are adorned with pumpkin personalities, intricate autumn leaves, and smiling scarecrows. Classroom routines have become familiar and comfortable patterns, and students are engaged in much learning and exploration. School life is good at Island View.

In fact, the Anacortes School District Board of Directors recently visited Island View, an event that happens annually. During their time at Island View, board members visited classrooms to see what and how students are learning. All members were very impressed by the high level of student engagement they saw in every classroom they visited. One member commented, “I didn’t see one student off task in four classrooms—that is simply amazing!”

Be proud: they are your kids and teachersJ.

One positive change I would like to highlight is the lower class sizes in our K-3 classrooms. On average, there are 18 students in each K-3 classroom at Island View. This is a result of additional funds provided by the state to lower class sizes for our youngest students. Teachers can now spend more time with individual students, they can more easily differentiate instruction, and management challenges are reduced. I experienced this firsthand when I recently filled in for a first grade teacher. After recess, I asked the students to put away their jackets and meet me at the carpet for a read-aloud. They did so—remarkably quickly and quietly.  I noticed they all had space to move. They found their spots at the carpet, calmly sat down, and looked up at me with eager attention. We then enjoyed Little Boo, a beautiful story about the life of a pumpkin seed.  I’ll say it again: Life is good at Island View.
